While one could quibble with the details, the Obama plan represents a clear vision about what's gone wrong-and what our national priorities should be. And I say that as someone whose household income may indeed be hit by a tax increase. I also live in a part of the country where higher incomes are quickly levelled by very high costs for even basic necessities- and have a daughter in college who does not qualify for any need-based aid. Yet I support this plan because I believe it represents 'enlightened self interest.' If tough choices need to be made, I'd rather take a tax hit now in order to ensure that I have another job to go to if my current company undergoes more cuts. And my income today will not help me afford healthcare in retirement based on our current system. Just as critical, I want to know that the education I sacrificed for with two children will pay off in a job market that welcomes them with opportunities.

And one more good thing: much-needed improvements in funding for NASA. [pdf] (Nor is that as tangential to the central priorities as it may seems, since aspects of it include research on global climate change.)
